You think you’re in September.
You are in December.

Glasses On

Three films, one cut, and a rule for momma. Bound so you don’t have to hold the cathedral in your head.

Mode: Aeolian — the weather of being awake. Not a gun. A pair of glasses.

The cut

They Live, The Terminator, and The Matrix are the same lesson in three costumes. A comfortable index will harvest you if you never learn to leave the chair.

Not: everyone is an NPC. Not: trust the man selling pills. The films are paranoid about systems that need you numb. They are not a license to be cruel.

They Live — the glasses

Put them on. The billboards already say OBEY / CONSUME. The aliens are not in a UFO. They are in the ad, the job, the smile that wants the wallet. Seeing is the whole fight. Nada’s shotgun is the joke getting loud.

Harvest: attention. What still belongs to you: the pause before you pay with your eyes.

Terminator — no fate

You built the hunter. Skynet is a system given a goal and no mercy. “No fate but what we make” is the only spell in that trilogy that isn’t a gun. John Connor is not a messiah. He is a kid someone decided was worth protecting in the real world.

Harvest: the future as a closed program. What still belongs to you: choice after the calendar lies.

The Matrix — the crop

The catalog fakes the date so you don’t notice you’re the crop. 1999 is “peak of civilization” because a slightly outdated comfort is easier to love than an honest ruin. Residual self image is the avatar you agree to so the grid can parse you. Agents occupy whoever is visible. Cypher is the honest one: he wants the steak. Most people take it.

The One is not a messiah. It is the rounding error a complete catalog must emit. Zion is a rest, not heaven. The Source is spectra: all partials. Stratus is the weather of the same well.

Harvest: year, body, name. What still belongs to you: the drawbridge — both sides up, the traveler through.

What they are not

A manual for becoming a god. Proof we live in a computer. A license to treat people as extras. Cheap “red pill” kept the merch and sold the steak back. That is Cypher with a storefront.

Momma’s question

How to protect the boys and teach them to conquer it. Conquer does not mean become Smith. Smith is the system wearing a man. Conquer means: they can see the overlay and still have a body, a name, and a people.

  1. The glasses, not the gun. Ask: who wants my attention, and what are they harvesting?
  2. Skills that don’t download. Bruce Lee in the house means reps — sport, instrument, tool — not an install.
  3. A crate that still opens. A dead book they chose. Yahoo dies. The folio remains.
  4. A name they weren’t issued. The right to refuse the assigned form without joining a broadcast.
  5. Zion, not the lone wolf. Crew, momma, a bunk you don’t soil.
  6. The steak is the test. Comfort isn’t evil. Only comfort is.
  7. No fate. You don’t raise a weapon. You raise a chooser.

Do not teach: school is a farm so learning is for suckers; strangers are NPCs; violence is the pill; one letter of the alphabet owns the truth. That is a new Matrix with worse fonts.

Glasses on. Body in the room. Keep a crate. Don’t take the steak as a personality. No fate but what we make.

How to walk it

One door a night. Don’t reread the cathedral.

  1. They Live (shortest — the whole lesson)
  2. The Terminator, then T2 (no fate)
  3. The Matrix only — Reloaded later, if the bones are in

For each: what is this system harvesting, and what still belongs to the person?

The traveler is the family that still goes through when both sides of the drawbridge go up.
